Water, Hydration And Health

You might have heard this before - “we never understand the worth of water till the well is dry”. It’s true. People often overlook the importance of water as one of the basic nutrients required for the normal functioning of the body. Not only does it play an integral role in maintaining an optimum level of hydration but also aids in treating ailments like kidney stones, heart diseases, diabetes, skin conditions, lethargy, constipation etc.

Let’s find out what the health benefits of water are-
  • Body Temperature Regulation: As said earlier, water helps in the proper functioning of body. It regulates the body temperature through perspiration, dissipating the heat and making the body cooler. An average adult requires 55 to 75% water to stay hydrated. Drinking sufficient amount of water, especially during the hotter months helps in preventing dizziness caused due to dehydration.
  • Younger Looking skin: Many of you do not know that water is a natural remedy for a glowing, healthier and younger looking skin. Drinking plenty of purified water is more likely to result in better skin than applying cosmetic creams and lotions. Water when consumed in sufficient amount keeps the skin moisturized and makes the wrinkles and fine lines appear less visible.
  • Stronger joints: One of many benefits of drinking water is that it keeps the joints strong, flexible and healthy. This is the reason why health physicians recommend drinking 8 glasses of water, on an average, in a day. Water keeps the joints hydrated and makes the movement pain free.
  • Less risk of memory related diseases: Memory related diseases like Alzheimer's are quite common in old people. One reason that leads to the prevalence of this disease is the cognitive decline. In order to function properly, brain needs adequate amount of oxygen. Drinking plenty of water helps brain get the oxygen it needs, improving the levels of cognitive performance.
  • Losing weight: As great as it sounds, water may actually help in losing weight and keeping it off. It increases the metabolism rate by burning the calories and cutting down the fat. As water has zero percent calories, it is considered as one of the best nutrients for keeping the body healthy without adding extra calories to it.
Though people have different opinions, spring water harvested from natural springs is microbiologically and nutritionally considered to be one of the best sources of water.
